Most of us have more devices than ports on the wall, so most people have a surge-protector behind their televisions and under their desks. However, not all surge protectors are similar and some even put their equipment at risk. We talked to an electrician about how to differentiate between good and evil and how to use them safely.recommend LITTELFUSE CG2-800L GAS DISCHARGE TUBE, 2P, 2.5KA, 1.5KV (1 piece)
Overvoltage protection or uninterruptible power supply (UPS)?
Surge protectors protect your equipment by ensuring that only a certain amount of power gets to your connected equipment. You can purchase them as single issue units or as multiple issue power boards.
An inverter will do the same, but will provide an emergency power supply in the event of a power failure for a limited time. This means that in the event of a failure, the power supply has little time to save its work on the computer and shut it off normally. Some UPS units also reduce fluctuations in your power supply, which protects your equipment in the long run.
How many joules do you need for good overvoltage protection?
You want to protect your equipment, but you do not always want to buy a new surge-protector if you protect it.
If you use one that has a very good joule, it should take many breakouts and pimples.
I suggest a rating of over 3000 joules. A little less and your surge-protector can not survive a peak. Your device may not be protected if you receive more than one high voltage notice before replacing the surge-protector.
Overvoltage protection with a low Joule value can be destroyed by a single high voltage spike. These cheap protectors must be replaced frequently. You end up saving more money in the long run by getting a good Joules surge-protector to get you started.
How does a surge protector work?
When the voltage exceeds the allowable level, the surge arrester removes the surge to avoid damage. In particular, internal components, called metal oxide varistors (MOVs), absorb the excess voltage and redirect it to the ground wire, preventing it from reaching the connected equipment. To work effectively, a surge-protector must be plugged into a grounded, wired outlet. Some surge-protectors contain indicators that alert users to possible wiring problems.LITTELFUSE CG2 800L DISCHARGE 2 5KA 1 5KV You can check price LITTELFUSE CG2-800L GAS DISCHARGE TUBE, 2P, 2.5KA, 1.5KV (1 piece)
